THE BIBLE AND ROSARY BEADS TAKE ON UGANDAN SPIRITS
EVEN the great fear! This is what happened to Captain John Emily Otekat, the Member of Parliament of Serere County, Soroti district.
For about two months, traditional spirits referred to as eiffaro in Ateso, have been burning down grass-thatched houses in the county. The local leaders went to the MP for help and he agreed to rescue his people. He took tents and blankets for the homeless. As soon as he left, all the items he had brought for the people caught fire. The people who came to witness the incident were beaten by the aggrieved spirits.
On hearing this, Otekat came with a Bible and a rosary. Before he could start his car, people swarmed his car calling upon him to rescue them.
After sometime, the cause of the problem was found. The spirits were following a man's wife, who had refused to return to their home.
Otekat offered a lift to the couple so that they could rejoin and solve the spirit problem. Mid-way the journey, all the MP's car tyres deflated and he was stuck in a swamp.
Otekat abandoned the car with the couple and ran for his dear life. He boarded a bodaboda back to Soroti and sent mechanics to pick the car, which he has since parked at his home.
No one knows what happened to the couple and spirits have since been silent.
