CAPTURING THE GHOSTS OF SINGAPORE

THE shaky camera movements, the heavy breathing, the shouts and a misty figure in the distance.

Instead, this is a local documentary entitled Ghosts - The Singapore Hauntings, made by paranormal group Organisation For Supernatural Research and Investigation (OSRI).

The one-year-old society is one of several hobby groups here investigating the supernatural.

Mr Fahmi Rais, 39, CEO of public relations firm iBrand and an OSRI member, said the documentary was a collection of footage from the group's investigations into paranormal activity around Singapore.

The film is being made for the society's first anniversary.

'Iwouldn't say this is an award-winning film as this was done in-house by the group and it was edited on a computer,' he said.

'As a responsible group of investigators, it is our responsibility to share the information as much as we can with the public.

'Whether the public wants to believe it or not is up to them.'

Mr Fahmi added: 'For those who have faith in this, this film will reaffirm their belief in the supernatural.

'For the cynics, I hope it will be an interesting and entertaining hour for them.'

The film claims to contain 20 ghost sightings around Singapore, which were recorded by the society's members last year.

Some of the sightings had to be re-enacted because the group couldn't capture the original sightings properly.

OSRI collaborated with local media company Life Records to produce the one-hour film on DVD ($14.90) and VCD ($12.90) in English. The film, which was launched last month, has a PG (Horror) rating.

Life Records said the VCD has sold 4,000 copies while DVD sales have hit the 1,000 mark.

Filming took place between Marchlast year and February this year and the society spoke with various people who claimed they had experienced ghostly sightings.

To add credibility to the enterprise, one of the interviewees is Mr Othman Wok, the former Minister of Social Affairs.

He is also the author of two horror books - Malayan Horror and Cerita2 Seram (Horror Stories).

As for spooky happenings while filming, Mr Fahmi recalled that at one spot near Bukit Timah, their equipment failed several times.

REPEAT VISITS

'We went back with fresh equipment and batteries and they still failed. We went back to the same spot a week later and it worked,' he said.

One of the challenges was being denied permission to film on government property so the crew had to film in public areas like reservoirs and nature reserves.

In 2005, another group, the Singapore Paranormal Investigators collaborated with SingTel to come up with mini documentaries for SingTel's 3G mobile customers.

Customers could download the society's cases on their handphones.

Every man's life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another.
