Bloemfontein - He sold his soul to the devil and conjured up evil spirits before the murder of 64-year-old Emmerentia Botha of the farm Skuilhoek in the Wanda district, says the man sentenced for raping and murdering her.

"Evil spirits sometimes make me say and do wrong things," Willem Vis, 23, said while testifying against his 15-year-old companion.

The young boy from Luckhoff is appearing before Judge A Kruger in the Free State High Court on charges of house-breaking with intent to rob, robbery with aggravating circumstances, rape and murder.

Vis testified that he called on the evil spirits before they went to the farm.

He said he felt that he had to sell his soul to the devil, because life was not good to him and he had suffered.

"I wanted a life of wrong-doing."

Vis admitted guilt and was sentenced last week to 37 years in prison, plus life imprisonment.
