GHOSTS LINGER ON IN EIGHTEENTH CENTURY HOUSE
THE Rhymney House Hotel was built in 1801 as the house of the owner of the Rhymney Iron Company.
It was owned by Richard Crawshay, of Cyfarthfa Castle, but became a club in 1967.
Despite its many changes and extensive refurbishments, the Rhymney House Hotel has maintained a number of the original features.
There have been many different reports of hauntings at the hotel, including a lady in a white mob cap and dress, a young child, an old lady by the fire, a black shadowy figure and a dominant man with a fishing rod, alongside various sounds and movements.
The Haunted Cardiff and the Valleys book, compiled by the South Wales Paranormal Research group, tells the story of how the hotels resident paranormal investigators John and Lisa Sutton and their team from Ghostknights felt a presence on a visit to the hotel.
The book says: While sitting in the front bar area and also the restaurant, they have heard the patter of footsteps running across the room above.
Upon further investigation, it was found that there was nobody present on the upper floors at all.
While in the base room they were sat on the bed listening to a medium relate a story when the locks on their case started to rattle.
They had not moved on the bed and six people witnessed this experience.
Again while sitting in the base room they heard the sound of a cat meowing behind them.
One incident that spooked them was when someone or something crouched down in the corner of the top floor in front of the fire exit. They also saw the fire door handle turn upwards.
The book also tells how Electronic Voice Phenomena has been experienced during a visit to the hotel.
Mrs Sutton, 39, said: The Rhymney Hotel is definitely haunted. As soon as I walked in there for the first time I could feel a presence.
When I saw the handle go up, I was very frightened.
