Amy Zellmer has an artistic eye when it comes to photos. She sees the beauty in life and it reflects in her photographs no matter who or what the subject is. The photos she has taken are alive with movement and color.

Amy is working hard towards her Master of Photography through the Minnesota Professional Photographers Association. She also is active on the board of the MPPA, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Shakopee Downtown Partnership. She is a very levelheaded businesswoman who owns her own Portrait Studio in Shakopee called Custom Creations Photography.

When Amy first looked at the location on First Avenue, almost a year ago, she thought it was perfect. It had 2 offices, a small kitchen area, a waiting area and the large room in the back just the right size for her studio. She has tastefully decorated each room so her guest would feel comfortable and welcomed.

After everything was set up and the Studio was open for business, she started having problems. The lights kept burning out in the offices and the camera lights would misfire. The door to her office would close on it’s own. She had called in an electrician 3 times to come over to check the lines but he never could find any problems. If this wasn’t frustrating enough for her, she often felt as though she was not alone. Some of her guests also commented about the same feeling when they too had their session.

One day a lady made an appointment to have her portrait done. As she sat there Amy was once again having problems with her lighting. The lady said she was psychic and she told Amy that she had spirits in her studio and they were causing the lights to burn out. The lady told them to stop and Amy was had no more problems with the pictures on that day.

After the lady had left Amy thought about what she had said. It would explain some of the things that had accrued in her studio. She wondered if this was true. After reading one of my stories, Amy e-mailed me asking me to come to her studio to look into her problem to see if she did after all have a spirit.

When I met Amy, I found her to be a warm, friendly young lady. She had a cheery open disposition and greeted me warmly. She walked me through her business and explained what was happening and where. When we were done, I set up the video camera and then I made my walk through. I had discovered some high EMF readings in a few locations. I suspected that this might be the cause of her problems. I explained to her that some people are sensitive to such readings. Prolong exposure could result in the feeling of being watched and hearing footsteps. I suggested that next time an electrician comes to her office to have him look into it. Even though this might be a cause for her feeling not alone, it didn’t explain why other people felt the same feeling nor did it explain the door closing or the lights burning out all the time. In many of the places where there have been spirits present, lights for some reason do burn out quickly. It is believed that spirits absorb the energy that lights use and there for they burn out quicker then normally.

While I was there, Amy went about her business as usual, I observed that she did not stay long in the room where the highest EMF readings were. This meant there wasn’t prolonged exposure to EMF. I walked around and tape recorder and took photos in every room. I sat for a while in the studio area and asked questions to the spirits to see if they would respond to me. Then I took a short break leaving my video and tape recorder running. When I came back I walked through once again then I packed up my gear and left.

Now the hard work was coming, reviewing all the evidence I got. The photos showed nothing of major interest, only an orb or two. The video camera did show some orbs acting unusual. As Amy left her office a large orb flew into the office. And as I walked into the studio area also a large orb flew out of the area. I thought this was unusual for orbs to act that way. They should be following the air current. They very well could have been, there are vents for heating and cooling, and the air was on that day. I don’t count orbs as spirits mainly because they also could be so many different things, such as dust, water vapor, and energy balls. Until I know for sure which one is which, I have to put orbs in my maybe pile.

I was on the disappointed side by not capturing anything on my films; however, once I listened to the tapes I was quite pleased. I had picked up several EVP’s. The interesting thing about it was they seemed to be interactive. They were responding to what was going on around them. There seems to be at least 4 spirits there, as the voices on the tapes are different. The air in the studio is nosey and it took some doing to clean some of them up but I did have some that were loud and clear as though they were standing next to me.

After I sent Amy the tapes, I asked her how she felt about her place of business being haunted. She told me she was relived that there was something there and it she wasn’t imagining it. She was curious about the spirits that share her space with and wondered more about them and why they were there. She didn’t mind sharing her place of business with the spirits as long as they behaved themselves and stopped interfering with the studio lights.

The studio is located in a building that used to be an old movie theater built in the 1920’s.

Thinking back to that time, the movies shown were silent, and it was a thrill for people to go to see these movies. I also suspect that it also was a meetinghouse where groups of people would gather. The reason why I suspect this is while I was sitting quietly in the studio area I faintly heard a bunch of people singing. It was Battle Hymn of the Republic. This song was written in 1861 during the civil war.

It’s unknown where or when these spirits had come from. They could have come from a time before this building was built or sometime during the lifetime of the building. What ever the case may be, they wonder the building and seem to enjoy the company of the living who visit there. When the lights go out, and the door is locked, it is their place once again.
