BE WARY OF PEOPLE PROMISING PROTECTION FROM EVIL SPIRITS
GEORGE TOWN: A housewife has lodged a police report alleging that two women cheated her of RM71,000 in cash and valuables by claiming to be able to help rid her of evil spirits.
Sources said the 53-year-old woman was approached by a Chinese national at a taxi stand in Jalan Pasar, Bukit Mertajam, on Jan 23.
The woman had asked the victim to help her locate a medium, on the pretext of finding her missing husband, but the victim said she did not know of any.
As they were talking, another woman, also believed to be a Chinese national, joined in the conversation and they went to a nearby coffee shop.
Sources said the two suspects then told the victim that she was being haunted by evil spirits and should follow their instructions if she did not want to be possessed.
They asked the victim for the money and valuables. The victim went home to get the cash and jewellery and handed them over to the suspects at the coffee shop.
Before leaving, the suspects gave the victim a black-coloured plastic bag and told her not to open it for a week.
The victim realised she had been tricked when she opened the plastic bag on Tuesday, only to find some food in it.
Police confirmed the case but have not detained anyone in connection with it.
