HAIGH HALL’S SPIRITED PAST

Ghosthunters believe Wigan could be home to one of the country's most haunted buildings.

Spirit seekers spent a whole night looking for ghostly goings-on at Haigh Hall – and say they were scared out of their wits.
The mediums claim to have seen a shadow emerging from one of the upstairs rooms, without anybody nearby.

A camcorder also picked up a disembodied man's voice in the historic Douglas Suite saying: "Stop laughing, I don't want you here".
The North West Spirit Seekers came from Liverpool for the event at Haigh Hall because they heard about the building's ghostly heritage.
Dozens of people joined them for a charity Fright Night to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Trust.

Spirit seeker Tricia Danson said: "It was one of our best nights ever, with loads of really strange things happening. We heard about Haigh Hall's numerous spirits, and the vigil certainly didn't disappoint."
Tricia's group of amateur ghostbusters started off on the hall's main stairs, where they conducted a seance.
All group members reported hearing clicking noises from the top of the stairs and Tricia said she felt as if a woman was with them but too shy to communicate.

She said: "Then our spines were really tingling when the door leading to the Douglas Suite suddenly opened. We were all waiting for someone to walk through, but were chilled to the bone when a black shadow came through the door and the door slammed behind it."
Medium Becky said she felt that it was a man, short in stature, around 5ft 5ins. Tricia felt it was the same man, David, they came across earlier on the second floor and that he wasn't happy with the group sitting on the staircase.

Tricia said: "I radioed the rest of the team to see if anyone had wandered off, which would have explained the shadow and door slamming, but everyone was accounted for. To say the least this put us on edge for the rest of our staircase vigil."
The group later found out that a David Lindsay did once reside at Haigh Hall, which made their experience all the more exciting. Tricia says the real highlight of the night was capturing some ghostly speech.

"We were in the Douglas Suite with the camcorder, and I'm sure it was David who was saying to us: 'Stop giggling, get out of my house'. I had a feeling he had a moustache, which fits in with David Lindsay, who had a moustache.
"Hearing the voice was really special, it's a real highlight and makes all the effort worthwhile. Now we've got some real evidence."
There is thought to have been a property on the Haigh Hall estate since 1220, when it belonged to Ranulf, Earl of Chester.
There have been two important families who have had a significant impact on Haigh Hall, the Bradshaighs and the Lindsays.

The Lindsays rebuilt Haigh Hall after 10 years of neglect. Work commenced in 1830 and it took 19 years to complete.
During the Second World War, the hall was used as a military hospital with casualties being brought back from Belgium and France, but in 1948 Wigan Corporation purchased the hall and estate.

The North West Spirit Seekers will be holding another overnight ghost hunt at Haigh Hall on March 2.
