PSYCHIC HELPS GOVERNMENT (NSW) MINISTER FIND A HUSBAND

Cherie Burton sought advice from TV psychic John Holland.

HOUSING Minister Cherie Burton has revealed she found a husband after an audience with television psychic John Holland.

Ms Burton said she had a private reading with the world-renowned medium in which she discussed the impact of the long hours of politics on her personal life.

She said Holland put her in touch with her late grandfather, who assured her she would find a husband and the month of September would be significant.

The MP met her husband Andrew Murphy at a St George rugby league match in September, 2003 - only months after the consultation.

They were married in 2006, and Ms Burton gave birth to their son, Joel, last September.

Ms Burton's interest in the afterlife was sparked when she attended a show by US medium John Edward in Sydney in 2003.

After the show, she was offered a private reading with fellow psychic John Holland, who had been touring with Edward.

During the consultation, Holland claimed to contact and pass on messages from Ms Burton's grandfather, who died six years ago.

"He knew the nickname my grandfather had for me, and the only person who knew that was my grandfather,'' she said.

"When you lose someone you really love, then get an opportunity to talk to someone who says they can communicate with these people, it's a bizarre experience.''

Despite being born a Catholic and being sceptical by nature, Ms Burton said she was a spiritual person and the experience has changed her.

"He was quite accurate about certain things. I was taken aback by the experience. It was very view-changing,'' she said.

"He kept saying September was significant, and I met my husband that September - and then my baby was born in September six months ago.''

Holland also told Ms Burton, who was then a parliamentary secretary for mental health, that she would do well in her career.

Ms Burton said she had focused heavily on her career and hadn't had time to find a man to start a family with.

These issues were at the forefront of her mind in her 20-minute session with Holland, who says on his website his psychic abilities were confirmed after a near-fatal accident when he was aged 30.

"I was single at the time, and getting older, and they said, 'You'll meet someone and get married and have a baby - and I've done all of that,'' she said.

"I've sort of always been career, career, career. I never thought I'd meet anyone, and then I met this lovely man and we got married.''

Ms Burton said it was hard for women in professional life to meet a man while working long hours.
"It's hard to meet someone. If you work as much as I do, it's hard to maintain relationships. You need to have someone very self-assured.

"Politics is a really hard profession to maintain a relationship, but I'm sure other professions are the same.''
