Learn how to buy gold
There are a number of reasons and ways to purchase gold as an investor. Depending on your experience or reasons for investing in gold, in addition to how much you're willing to invest in the first place, there are several things to think about.
If you're a completely new investor just looking to purchase a few collectibles than you're probably only looking to spend a few hundred dollars up to a few thousand dollars on bullion coins or semi-numismatic coins. The difference between numismatic coins and non-numismatic coins is that the former, such as British gold sovereigns tend to have an added premium because of their rarity and novelty "collectibles'" status. Although numismatic gold coins still hold their value against the market index of gold indices, they also have an added premium and as investment or collectible because of their special status. Similarly in the US in 2006 they started limiting production of the American Gold Eagle, leading to a small premium on this.
If you're an experienced investors looking to rustle up some serious money and spend over $10,000 on gold than you'll presumable be looking for rolls of gold bullion coins or even gold bars themselves. A 10 ounce gold bar (bullion) would cost more than $1400 by today's market prices, however you could also just buy a 1 ounce, 2 ounce, 5 ounce bar instead for less money.
In terms of where to buy gold, the best option by far is to go online. If you are looking to purchase and invest in physical units of gold (as opposed to a derivative fund or ETFs) than the best thing to do is look for an online gold dealer, preferably within your country.
The advantages of buying gold online are multiple. First of all, the prices of buying gold online will be much cheaper than going to your local dealer. This is because normally when you go to your local dealer he will have to buy the gold bullion or numismatic gold stock and earn a commission before he sells it to you. He'll normally be buying his gold stock from an online dealer anyway, where they have such huge availability of gold that the prices are cheaper. The best online gold dealers that I have previously used and would recommend again are APMEX.com or BullionVault.com. Apmex is an official American Precious Metals Exchange and has the biggest collection of gold, silver, platinum and palladium pieces for sale. You can buy gold coins, bars, numismatic coins, ranging in a number of prices from 1/10th ounce up to 10 ounce or more. Unlike many other internet brokers, they also have a huge collection of gold bullion and coins from all over the world including Gold Sovereigns, American Eagles, Maple Leafs, South African Krugerrands, Australian Lunars, Chinese Gold Pandas and much more.
In the UK, BullionVault.com is probably one of the biggest and most successful gold bullion dealers started in around 2008. Bullion Vault allows you to buy and sell gold (and silver now) online, and they have over $1 billion in gold (over 22 tonnes of gold). I would still recommend APMEX.com however because of their better customer service and much more user-friendly website and online store. They offer a huge range of accepted payment methods too (plus free rolls of gold coins that you can win) including credit cards, cheques, online ewallets and bank wires.

Frequently Asked Questions...
Can I take foraign gold to a British Pawnbroker?
I got given a gold ring a long time back and the marking inside the ring is South African 18K gold.
Is it possible for me to take this to a British Pawnbroker?
Answer:
If it's marked 18K it should be authentic but the likes of Spanish gold is purely cosmetic rubbish.
