Sacajawea Dollars
The Presidential [Dollars] symbolize the most recent try by the US Mint to circulate a one dollar coin in the United States. It's a noble ambition... properly, a minimum of it is a worthy attempt to save some money. Dollar coins value pennies to make, and so they last an extended, lengthy time. Paper [dollars] do not price much to make either, however they solely final about six months on average.
Will the public truly use them? Does it matter?
The greenback coin has never been wildly fashionable with the public. Again in 1794, when the primary US dollar coin was launched, a dollar was loads of money. Individuals didn't need a lot of them day to day. That was fine. The fledgling US mint was initially a jury rigged establishment not identified for its efficiency. Mintages have been low. And apart from, the Spanish silver "piece of eight" was much more plentiful. It was recognized by the public as a coin produced from good silver. The US Congress specified that the new American greenback coin be made to a specification similar to that of the Spanish coin, which it also allowed to circulate as authorized tender until 1857.
By the time the mint had developed into a extra significant establishment, with ample means to produce coins of top of the range in enough quantity, the need for the still massive silver greenback was threatened, first by the Civil Struggle, during which cash of all sizes had been hoarded by the citizenry, after which, as an outgrowth of the wartime coin shortage, the growing acceptance of paper money. Paper [dollars] had been more convenient, particularly within the populous Eastern states. Now, it's interesting to know, that regardless that the general public, besides at the gaming tables in Nevada, has never been fond of the "silver cartwheels" - the government has not often let that stand in the way of greenback coin production. When silver mines overproduced during the 1870s, and the value of silver was falling, Congress passed laws requiring that, for each paper dollar printed, a silver dollar could be struck.
And in order that they were - by the millions. But they didn't flow into, at least not within the portions being produced. A lot of the silver [dollars] of that period were put into canvas baggage and saved in bank vaults. Many were stored on the mint. I have personally noticed the curved indentations made by these coins in the lead lined walls of a San Francisco Mint vault after I toured the building years ago. And after I was a kid within the 1950s, I could take a twenty greenback bill to my native bank and exchange it for a roll of twenty silver dollars. Many of those had been in uncirculated condition with dates within the 1870s, 80s, and 90s!
By 1935 the mint had struck its final conventional 90% silver one dollar coin.
Moving ahead to 1971 a brand new dollar coin appeared. This was the Eisenhower greenback, which commemorated the primary President remembered by a lot of the Boomer Generation. It was the identical dimension as the outdated silver dollar, but at greatest, contained barely 40% silver. The primary time I obtained "Ike" [dollars] in circulation was in 1972 at a gasoline station in California, just past the Nevada state line. It was the only time I ever noticed them in change.
