How much precious metal is in a 100-mills metal-clad bar?
I'm seeing listings for 100-mills gold and silver bullion pieces with a total weight of 1 troy oz. Obviously, these are just coated with gold or silver and have nickel underneath. What is the total weight of precious metal in these items?
Answer:
Not much, just enough to electroplate the outside of the bar - as in the neighborhood of microns (1/1,000,000 of a meter) thick. It would be such a small amount, that the value of the underlying base metal will probably be worth more than the gold/silver layer. The total weight of the precious metals would have to be measured in fractions of a milligrams. These are purely decorative, prop pieces and have no real value.
